Jap Ji, by 14th-century Guru Nanak, is the prologue to the Guru Granth Sahib, a Sikh scripture. It tells of achieving unity with the creator of all. This film's narration is from the Kirpal Singh translation.
Jap Ji the Movie was written, produced and directed by George Arthur Lareau in the fall of 1974 in and around Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Lareau was the leader of Ruhani Satsang and was assisted by two dozen members of the group. The 16mm film sat in the can for 35 years before being released on DVD in 2009.
This visual interpretation of Jap Ji is the story of a wealthy young woman, played by Pamela Dorsey, who leaves her riches behind in search of the true nature of things. She encounters many teachers and experiences in her quest and finally meets an enlightened cobbler, played by Bob Feldman. She returns home enlightened and begins teaching those drawn to her. "Home" is the University of Illinois' Allerton House. Many U of I students also volunteered for this production.
The film features original music written and performed by David Leetch and Linda Holmes. Maureen Pletcher was assistant producer. Lareau's wife, Leslie, and son, Hector, both contributed significantly. Other cast members include Jane Burke, Joseph Whelan, John Lareau and Ileane Tatelbame.
